Use the tips of your fingers to move the indicator stick up and down. Notice how it “clicks” into position and the signal stays on until you click it off again.

Your car will usually cancel a turn signal automatically once the steering wheel has been turned and then straightened up again. Be aware, however, that a signal may be automatically cancelled sooner or later than you intended. You may have to reapply the signal if it goes off too soon, or you may have to cancel it manually if it stays on for too long.

In most modern cars, you can also hold the signal on by moving the indicator stick up or down, but not quite far enough to activate the click. In this case, when you release the indicator stick, the signal goes off straight away. This method of signalling can be very useful when you only need a brief signal, such as when changing lanes.

The reverse lights will come on automatically whenever you select reverse gear. Be aware that you are giving a signal to other road users when this gear is selected.

Head lights should normally be used dipped – without full beam. Unless you activate the full beam, the head lights should be dipped automatically. This means the light shines down toward the road surface and slightly to the left. It enables you to have the lights on without dazzling other road users.

If you need to use full beam to illuminate more of the road ahead, be aware of the effect on other road users (including cyclists and pedestrians) and make sure to dip your headlights whenever necessary.
