SKIDDING

When your vehicle starts to skid, you will usually feel the rear end of the vehicle shifting unexpectedly to one side. You need to identify which way the rear is moving, then steer into the skid. This means that if the rear is shifting towards the right, you should steer to the right. If the rear is shifting to the left, steer left. This can feel counter-intuitive as the instinctive reaction is often to steer away from the skid. 

Steer into the skid, and straighten the wheel as you feel the correction taking place. If you do not straighten the wheel, the skid will be transferred to the opposite side.

How you should the use the brake in this situation is a complicated issue involving many variable factors and many different opinions. Consider a “skid pan” training course to deepen your knowledge of skidding and how to deal with it.
