Know the Test Centre Routes
Bangor Driving Test Centre is based on Caernarfon Road, and tests typically take around 40 minutes. Getting familiar with the local roads before test day makes a huge difference. Your lessons with DMJ will naturally cover the areas around the test centre โ including the A55, Bangor city centre, and the surrounding residential roads.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common reasons learners fail their test in Bangor are:
- โขNot checking mirrors properly โ especially before signalling, changing speed, or changing direction. Examiners are looking for smooth, routine mirror use throughout.
- โขHesitation at junctions โ not pulling out when it's safe, causing unnecessary delays. Confidence is key.
- โขPositioning on roundabouts โ Bangor has several busy roundabouts. Make sure you're in the correct lane and signal appropriately.
- โขSpeed limits โ the roads around Bangor change between 20mph, 30mph and national speed limit zones. Stay alert to signs.
Prepare Your Mind, Not Just Your Skills
Test nerves affect even the most competent drivers. A few things that help:
- 1.Get a good night's sleep โ arriving tired makes everything harder.
- 2.Eat beforehand โ low blood sugar affects concentration.
- 3.Arrive early โ rushing to the test centre adds unnecessary stress.
- 4.Remember: minor faults are fine โ you can get up to 15 minor faults and still pass. One serious or dangerous fault will fail you, but a few minors are completely normal.
The Independent Driving Section
Since 2017, all practical tests include a 20-minute independent driving section where you follow either a satnav or road signs. Don't panic if you miss a turn โ it's not a fault to go the wrong way, only how you drive matters.
Our Pass Rate
At DMJ Driver Training, we're proud of our students who pass first time โ many with only a handful of minor faults. With the right preparation and lessons tailored to your needs, there's no reason you can't join them.
