How to Prepare Properly

Use the Ready to Pass? Checklist
Before your driving test, use the official DVSA checklist to honestly reflect on whether you're truly ready. Work through each point with your instructor and ask yourself: How well am I doing here? What's the real challenge for me? What would help me improve? Being honest with yourself is one of the best things you can do before test day.

Visit the Official Ready to Pass? Website
The Ready to Pass? website is packed full of advice for learner drivers — and for your parents too if they're supporting you. It covers everything from what to expect on test day to making the most of your lessons.

Track Your Progress with the Driver's Record
Your instructor uses the official DVSA Driver's Record to track your progress across 27 driving skills. Keeping track helps both you and your instructor see exactly where you're ready — and where you still need practice.

Read the Official Learning Materials
Reading alongside your lessons makes a real difference. The Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs are essential. The Official DVSA Guide to Learning to Drive explains exactly what standard you need to reach to pass.

Get Private Practice Between Lessons
Learners who combine professional lessons with private practice are 1.5 times more likely to pass. Speak to your instructor first so your private practice is at the right level for where you are in your training.

Take Mock Tests Seriously
Mock tests help you understand how faults are assessed, experience test conditions, and manage nerves. At DMJ Driver Training, your instructor will carry out a formal mock test two lessons before your actual test to make an honest assessment of your readiness.
